Appreciate the beauty of this Island Park.......... Visited: November 1999
Posted by amf
One need to appreciate the context of what St. John is all about.... its preserved forest and natural environment. One stays at a place like Harmony Studios in Maho.... spend time snorkeling.... (where are all the Angels?????) I had been to Maho twice before this trip in the mid '80s.... snorkeled in three feet of water and fish...Angels abound.... This year, sad to say, the Angels no longer abound...tragic, I must say!!!!! My daughter was thrilled to see schools of tiny fishes, but not angels. Still, I must say, the waters from above and under... is incredible in the Virgin Islands!!!!!!
A one morning tour of the entire St. John Island is a must .... to see the diversified terrain of this island. The different water shores, the harbors and coves and the marinas.... the views of the mountainsides.... the beauty of the preserved areas compared to over-developed sections..... The awareness to what this island is, is very crucial because the 'preserve' status makes what St.John USVI all about!!!!!!!
I cannot see St John losing its potable water.... what happened???????

Maho Pavilion Restaurant , St. John, USVI traveler review

Pavillion is Excellent but must add 2 more...... Visited: November 1999
Posted by amf
Yes, the Pavillion at Maho is excellent.... me and my young-adult daughter ate our dinners there.... the portions were so large especially for dinners we split the meal. There is always a variety of entrees to choice from, which was great, since meat was not always a preference.

Margarita Phil near Mongoose Junction by Cruz Bay is a nice place for lunch because they have a nicely prepared menu.... do try the conch fritters!!!!...goes well with the margaritas!

Now, one must venture and do the local color and the one that I recommend is the kiosk across the ferry docks in Cruz Bay.... Sheila's... she prepares meat, chicken and fried fish that is so Virgin Island... with piled up side orders that is so unique to USVI.....

If one has access to trying the pattes ...do try it....It is actually a version of the empanada with a choice of fillings of conch, saltfish, the meats or shrimps or crabs. Yum!

Try their homemade juices too... passion fruit or guava, tamarind, ginger something.....

Forget mainland eating and go the Virgin Island way...... you will love it and will miss it when you get back home!!!!!!

Harmony Studios, St. John, USVI traveler review

Harmony makes up for creature comforts Maho does not provide Visited: August 2008
Posted by amf
Just got back from St. John...stayed 4 nights in a Harmony Studio. Fantastic... fridge and bathroom, and the balcony with its trees and resident birds, just a relaxing accomodation. Steps up to the Harmony Studio clusters is not that bad, really!! Access to Maho's bays and the Pavillion for excellent meals (did not need to turn on stove), the store for sandwiches for lunch, and even adequate wines was not that inconventient!
Staff were in general congenial and efficient except one or two who need to be taught to be better mannered.
Requests for taxis and tour operators were available even in short notice.
Response to two calls for 'maintenance' were instant, though they were not major disasters.
Harmony Studios have the best all-around-view....dawn to dusk, rain or shine... such a beautiful place to spend a few days of ones vacation. One can't miss the night creatures sounds that overwhelms the place... one can't help but appreciate it!!!!

Pelicans Path, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

Beware!!! Please Read Before You Rent Visited: July 2008
Posted by welovestt
Renters beware! Owner is a scammer, they kept our security deposit. They charged us $200 for excessive water and electricity usage. Even though they had not received the bills yet. We did everything to conserve the resources. They stated it was at their discretion. They charged us $20 for toilet paper!!! $20 for washing 2 dishes left in the sink plus a whole host of other tasks, such as $20 to move a clock back downstairs, we moved the clock upstairs as the one upstairs did not work. Be warned that they expect you to wash the bath towels or you will be charged. However, they are no facilities on site, therefore you will need to spend time out of your vacation to do laundry!!

They did not mention the construction going on all around the property, so expect to be wakened at 8am by the sound of pneumatic hammers and electrical saws.

The website did not advise us that the owners also live on the property. Therefore there is no privacy. The owners and their extended family also use the pool.

The property is in need of some renovations. The A/C does not work well, and we turned it off during the day to conserve energy.

We have been to St Thomas four times in the last seven years, so we know what to expect. Our friends, who have lived on the island for over 20 years, are embarrassed that this type of scam goes on in their special island.

St Thomas is a wonderful place to visit, we highly recommend it. Just don’t stay at Pelicans Path in Hull Bay.

Lavender Hill Suites, St. John, USVI traveler review

It was beautiful May 9th - 16th, 2008. Visited: May 2008
Posted by bostonmike
We actually stayed in unit 1W the same week as the previous review. This room was furthest away from the construction, and we knew that before we booked. We were here during some parts of the day while construction was going on, and found that it really wasn't that bad.

We spent some time on the wrap around deck even, and it didn't phase us too much. We also found at times that it actually ended at 4:00 pm, and a couple days around 6:00 pm.

Besides the construction, we visit St. John to enjoy the beauty that it offers - so there wasn't much time spent in the room during the day.

Lavender Hill was beautiful. 1W was very clean and comfortable. We really did feel at home. We can't wait until our next visit, and have already started the booking process.

Matt was very helpful and helped us out with anything we needed. The proximity of Lavender to the town was a very short two-minute walk. It was ideal for Happy Hour at the Beach Bar!

We strongly recommend Lavender Hill Suites for a stay on St. John. Besides the construction during parts of the days, this place was well worth the money and made our stay very enjoyable. On St. John walking distance is key.

The food was good, but the waiters were terrible. Visited: November 1999
Posted by cathy
The food was great, but we had a waiter here one night who was terrible.

It did not seem to matter to him if he was good or not - since the tip was automatically added to the bill (that was a wooping 18%!). Not the next time!

The girl who waited on us was great - and she did not add the 18%.

We stayed at this beautiful place for 11 days. Our family loved it.

It had all the comforts of home. All we needed were our clothes and food. We used the hot tub every night, and it looked out over the beautiful sea.

We would highly recommend Casa Azure Villa.

Marriott Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Beach Resort, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

Wedding DISASTER at the Marriott! Visited: May 2008
Posted by bugaboo198273
My fiance and I got married at this resort in May after two years of planning and many, many, many payments, as anyone who has ever married (or experienced St. Thomas inflation) can imagine. Though the island of St. Thomas is breathtakingly beautiful and we had a lovely time outside the hotel, the Marriott Frenchman's Reef made a disaster of our wedding, and I highly advise you NOT to get married there under any circumstances.

Our reception site wasn't ready when the wedding started, because of the Marriott's ineptitude, they made us hold the reception in a much smaller venue than we paid for (which was still filthy), they "lost" the video footage of our wedding ceremony, they dragged my entire wedding party and I through iguana-feces-laden grass and destroyed our clothes and shoes, and they charged us twice for the wedding, resulting in several thousand dollars of overcharges on our CC. During all these disasters, our wedding coordinator was "at lunch" and could not be located.

All in all, the Marriott staff's attitude, lack of professionalism, and nonchalance regarding the horrific state of the reception site and event itself are unforgivable, and I would recommend that you get married elsewhere unless you want to be severely overcharged and overstressed for a haphazard, sloppy wedding.

Ventana, St. Thomas, USVI traveler review

Sitting in Ventana now.... Visited: August 2008
Posted by freitas
This is our last night at Ventana, and we had a wonderful stay. We came to St Thomas for our wedding, we were married on Magens Bay Beach 8/8/8 and hosted our reception at this spectacular villa. The views are amazing, as beautiful as the pictures are, they will never capture the true beauty of this place. I preferred to stay at the villa, as the driving and shopping when ships came in were not my favorite thing to do. You will never want to leave the Villa when you get here. If you have to shop for food - you MUST go to Cost-u-less, its basically CostCo - no membership required, however they do not open until 9:00am, so dont bother going any earlier. The other food stores are extremely pricey and leave a lot to be desired. Make sure you take a day to spend in St John - you will have to ferry over, but well worth the trip. Trunk bay has the BEST snorkeling. Ali from Ali taxi was really cool if you need a dependable open air taxi driver that accommodates a bunch of people. The mosquitos have a feast some nights/days, so use the sprays in the cabinet on the patio. A lot of the shops only open while ships are docked so you must do your shopping then, otherwise everything is closed.

We loved this Villa and hope you enjoy your stay. There's a guest book in the basket which is a good read and you can sign it as well.

Enjoy the attack Rooster (at 5:00am!!)

Seacove Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

Seacove boasts stunning views! Visited: July 2008
Posted by islandtime
We knew when we booked this trip that we were going to really enjoy it, but the pictures on the Internet did not do the house justice. This house was fabulous!

We took my in-laws for their 50th wedding anniversary - and they absolutely loved the house.

It had such a wonderful balcony with a fantastic view of Peter Bay and Cinnamon Bay. We spent a good portion of the evenings on the balcony with a drink in hand just watching the boats roll in and out. It was so relaxing, it was hard to leave.

Since getting back to the states, we have done nothing but try to figure out when we can get back there. If we didn’t have three small kids, we would probably be there right now.

I have already recommended this place to several co-workers, and we definitely plan on staying at Seacove Villa on our next visit to St. John.

Panache Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

This was a great house with a great view. Visited: July 2008
Posted by zimmey4
Five of us stayed at the Panache Villa, and were all entranced by the lovely view.

At night, sitting on the deck looking up at the stars was wonderful with the cool breezes.

The house was super - older, but well maintained. Having AC throughout was important to us, but a couple of the wall units were more than noisy, and had the musty/damp smell.

This was our first time in St. John, and one week truly was not long enough to explore everything. They had excellent snorkeling!

Royal Palms Villa, St. Croix, USVI traveler review

It was a tropical paradise. Visited: June 2008
Posted by hankj
Our family had a wonderful week at Royal Palms Villa. The view from the pool and covered veranda were lovely. A couple of sand crabs came out to play with us while we were at the pool.

We felt at home with the spacious, well stocked kitchen that made it easy to prepare some meals in the villa. The separate bedrooms afforded us the opportunity to have quiet time and solitude when desired. The great room allowed for the family to gather and enjoy games, TV and reading.

The nearby beach at Buccaneer Bay was handy for a dip in the ocean, although the pool was so handy at the villa, we often just stayed there for our swimming enjoyment.

We saw a lot of lizards. The garden outside the lanai was a beautiful backdrop for photos. The whole place was so pretty, we decided to make a little video tour to remember it by.

Reef Bay View Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

We had a spectacular stay at Reef Bay View. Visited: June 2008
Posted by gourmetgirl11
We were in St. John for ten glorious nights, and we stayed at Reef Bay View. We have stayed here many times, but since the house changed rental companies, we were really impressed with the cleanliness of the house.

We were welcomed with flowers in each room, and had a welcoming basket with coffee for our first morning.

This was a great house because of the views, the pool, and the hot tub. An additional plus was that we could walk down a path to Reef Bay beach and hike to the Petroglyphs!

We have rented many different houses in St. John, but once we came to Reef Bay View, we have always stayed here. We will rent this villa again and again as we value the feeling of privacy. It is always our vacation heaven!

Panache Villa, St. John, USVI traveler review

They had exceptional views. Visited: December 2007
Posted by autumnsong
Panache is an older, beautifully maintained villa that is very well equipped. Because of its age, it has a first class spot looking over Rendevous Bay.

It is difficult to find an all AC villa with a heated pool, but Panache has both. The bedrooms are just about equal. However, there is a one-bedroom with a little adjoining room (used for younger children) in the main house, which has a splendid great room with huge doors that open out to that terrific view.

The other bedrooms are across the veranda, and are in a separate building via staircases. They are very private from one another, but would not be suitable for young children (too far away). Teens or other couples would find the privacy a plus.

There is a self contained apartment under the pool deck via a staircase. The only drawback (at this date) was the dated little old TV in the great room. There was no cable while we were here. However, there was a DVD player. There were no TVs in any bedrooms, either.

The outdoor shower wasn't really outdoors. It just connected to a very narrow alley. Ask to have the pool heater started before you get there. It took a day to get comfortable, even though this is an all-day sundeck.

If this property had a hot tub and better TVs, I would rate it a "5". This our 19th trip to St. John.

My wife and I dined at Lotus recently, and our experience was better than we ever could have expected! We could not believe we found this gem on St. Thomas, but we are so glad that we did.

I had a surf and turf with filet mignon and local lobster that was to die for. My wife had a phenomenal sushi platter. Their menus were very creative and unique. I only wish we had found it earlier.

The service was top-notch, and I clearly recommend this to anyone staying on St. Thomas. You will not be disappointed.
